IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)

The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. The MYP aims to develop active learners and internationally minded young people who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning.

    Students participating in the MYP:

build confidence in managing their own learning,
learn by doing and connecting the classroom to the larger world,
consistently have greater success in IB Diploma Programme examinations,
thrive in positive school cultures where they are engaged and motivated to excel,
develop an understanding of global challenges and a commitment to act as responsible citizens.

The MYP is a coherent and comprehensive curriculum framework that provides academic challenge and develops the life skills appropriate to this age group. As part of the IB's continuum of international education, the MYP naturally follows the PYP and serves as excellent preparation for the Diploma Programme (DP). There are also many curricula, including national models that schools may have to, or choose to, apply within the framework of the MYP. The MYP has been implemented very successfully in a variety of international and national schools with differing requirements and curricular demands.
The MYP curriculum framework comprises eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for early adolescents (see the BISS MYP HANDBOOK for 2017 - 2018). The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and responsibility in their community. Teaching and learning in the MYP is underpinned by the following concepts:

Teaching and learning in context

Students learn best when their learning experiences have context and are connected to their lives and their experience of the world according to their knowledge. Using global contexts, MYP students develop an understanding of their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet through developmentally appropriate explorations of:

    identities and relationships
    personal and cultural identity
    orientations in space and time
    scientific and technical innovation
    fairness and development
    globalization and sustainability.

Conceptual understanding

Concepts are big ideas that have relevance within specific disciplines and across subject areas. MYP students use concepts as a vehicle to inquire into issues and ideas of personal, local and global significance and examine knowledge holistically. The MYP prescribes sixteen key interdisciplinary concepts along with related concepts for each discipline.

Approaches to learning

A unifying thread throughout all MYP subject groups, approaches to learning (ATL) provide the foundation for independent learning and encourage the application of their knowledge and skills in unfamiliar contexts. Developing and applying these social, thinking, research, communication and self management skills helps students learn how to learn.

Service as action, through community service

Students take action when they apply what they are learning in the classroom and beyond. IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a commitment to service—making a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.

Inclusion and learning diversity in MYP

As part of the MYP curriculum, we address differentiation within the written, taught and assessed curriculum.

Performing Arts

The Drama Department is designed to help students understand the nature of Drama and Theatre. Students learn to understand not only by studying it; to understand not only with their minds but with their bodies and their emotions. They will learn the forms it takes in cultures other than their own and through this understanding, to better understand themselves, their society and their world.

MYP Drama (Grades 6-10) examines issues and knowledge through the exploration of a variety of Drama styles including Comedy, Tragedy, Clowning, Physical Theatre, Silent Films and Directing.

The Diploma Theatre programmes extends that knowledge through understanding of the world and Theatre's place in it. The Drama Department offers many opportunities to students to participate in the production and performance side of the Performing Arts.

Our students can be involved as dancers, actors, make-up artists, sound and lighting technicians, to name a few. Venture into the Drama Studio and be transported to another time, place or era - something that can only happen in Drama.

Art & Creation

Students in this programme investigate and understand the meaning of art from various cultures. They examine social and historical contexts and experiment with various expressive visual qualities.

As they progress, they learn to create art works that reflect their own ideas and cultures and they create work that have strong personal meanings. They plan their work with thoughtful application of the art elements and principles, experiment with a variety of media and produce work that shows their techical skill. The course culminates with an exhibition of the best of the student's work and an interview with an external examiner from IB.

Music

Music students at BISS learn to apply their knowledge and skills creatively through composing, performing and listening. They are engaged and challenged in every unit of study. They learn to evaluate themselves and others and to continuously reflect upon their own development. BISS Music teaches students to listen deeply and to appreciate a wide variety of music which may be new to them.

The music courses at BISS have been designed with a whole-school approach to take students from early childhood and the PYP (Pre-K through Grade 5), through the MYP (Grades 6-10) to the IB Diploma (Grades 11-12). Students take Music as an elective subject from Grade 9 onwards.

BISS offers students the opportunity to play or sing in after-school groups. Choir, Flute Ensemble, String Ensemble, Guitar Workshop and Rock Bands rehearse regularly and perform throughout the year. Also, students can learn instruments privately from visiting instrumental teachers.

Music Technology is embraced at BISS. Students use digital recording and editing equipment; music notation/composing software; and midi (musical instrument digital interface) equipment. Students and teachers are encouraged to use digital audio-visual technology on a daily basis to enhance learning at BISS.

Knowledge and skills learnt in music have positive benefits in many aspects of life. At BISS, we aim to provide students with this gift.

Athletics

BISS is proud to boast an Athletics programme full of variety and opportunities for our Elementary and Secondary students. The tables below list the teams and special one-off tournaments and events the students can participate in.

BISS is a member of the Association of Chinese And Mongolian International Schools (ACAMIS), and of the International Schools Activities Conference – Beijing / Tianjin (ISAC). Our membership provides our students a chance to compete with other schools from the Beijing area, Shanghai, Tianjin, Hong Kong and Taiwan. This also means students can have the opportunity to travel to participate in tournaments. This is a special time for our sports teams as comradeship and friendships are strengthened during these events.

Sportsmanship, positivity and empowering our students are the key goals of our athletics programme at BISS. We encourage all students to further their skills, try something new and enjoy the balance that sports and exercise can bring to their school life.
